Humble Before God

03/21/2021

Now what does it mean to humble ourselves before God?

It means coming before Jesus in awe and reverence, despite what people may think of you. It's being willing to say, "I was wrong". It's the positioning of your heart to be open to His Word. It's taking the focus off of yourself and focusing on what really matters - God.

Come to the cross with a clear conscience. Confess your sins to the Lord, give up whatever is burdening you, and be willing to leave it at the cross. Much too often, we give something up to God and try to take it right back when we get stressed about it.

James 4: 10 - "Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up."

It is the natural and sinful tendency of every man to be proud, to think of himself more highly than he ought to, and to be blind to his low estate in comparison to God.

So, we will never become a Christian while proud. We will never be converted without humility. Many of us think humility means being weak or passive. That's not God's message to us.

The following statements show the power in humility.

We can handle unfair treatment peacefully when you are humble.

Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. (Ephesians 4: 31-32)

We can respond to unfair treatment without becoming bitter. Godly humility means we do not feel a need for vengeance or revenge.

We do not have to put on a "false front" when we are humble.

When we understand God and humility, we don't need to act like a big shot. The better you know God, the less you have to prove.

We can learn from criticism without being defensive.

When we are humble, we can respond to and learn from criticism without becoming defensive-whether it is deserved or not deserved. Likewise, we can be aware of our failures without being emotionally devastated.

We can ask for forgiveness when we are humble.

Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift. (Matthew 5: 23-24)

Even if we think we are only one percent wrong, we can easily apologize for what we did wrong.

We can talk with the right attitude when we are humble.

We can talk courteously and lovingly, regardless of the situation - even if we need to be firm or take strong action.

We will usually be more successful when we practice what the Bible says about God and humility than if we are pushy or arrogant. Even if we don't achieve the results we hoped for, we have the joy and pleasure of having acted in a godly manner. When we understand the meaning of humility in the Bible and put it into practice, we are a winner-even if we do not "win."

Hence, let us leave pride and follow humility in our lives.
