Doing Good
Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. - Galatians 6:9
Paul urges the Galatians not to grow tired of doing good. Doing good is hard work, especially if someone begins to doubt whether it matters. It is futile to expect a harvest if we do not sow!
Why should we do good deeds?
Whether you call it random acts of kindness, paying it forward, or good deeds, they are very powerful. There are many benefits to doing good deeds. Some of these benefits may be very obvious to you, while you may not have considered some of the others.
I am sure that we are already generous people. Here are the reasons to do even more good deeds than we currently do.
- When we do a good deed, we are, of course, helping someone.
- Besides helping someone, doing a good deed warms our own heart and makes us feel good.
- Helping others gives us a new perspective and keeps us from focusing on our own problems. By focusing on someone other than ourselves, we are reminded that we are not the only one in the world that has problems. In fact, it is possible that there are many people out there whose problems are much worse than ours.
- In addition, your good deeds may influence your children and other people in your Church to follow suit and do the same or similar kind of giving that you do. Without having to lecture or cajole others, simply by doing, you influence and lead others by your example.
- As you become generous, you feel powerful. You see the world in a more positive light. As you notice the plight of others, your perspective shifts and you don't look upon your own problems as much.
Every act of kindness is a seed sown. It will grow and we will reap its harvest in due course. Since God has been blessing us, it is our responsibility to bless others.
A tree is known by its fruit; a man by his deeds. A good deed is never lost; he who sows courtesy reaps friendship, and he who plants kindness gathers love.
This week, let us do one good deed every day. It could be a gift to others, a hug to someone, a warm appreciation to a loved one, a financial help to someone who is in need.
